"...........One more interesting fact is that, though the lord is Venkateshwara, the temple is known as 'Ranganathaswamy Temple'! The reason apparently was because Tipu Sultan, under whose territory MAgaDi used to come, was averse to all Hindu Gods, except Lord Ranganatha! This was because Lord Ranganatha resided in his capital (Srirangapatna), on whom he had special respect. So, to prevent Tipu from destroying this temple, God himself was rechristened!...."

Yes, this temple is known by a name other than the main diety. But I see no truth in the reason though the story seems believable. The fact is that the ranganathaswamy idol is udhbava murthy and is still growing. this fact has been established by archeologists themselves and the markings of growth of the idol can be seen. it is this fact that the growth can be seen so clearly, that the popularity of the idol gained prominence with the locals... and the name just followed.

Nice blog again, keep it up.
good to hear from folks who visit and put it in words, also gives an impression to the outside world how things are.

The pictures are good.

What are the important festivals and important dates any such information that was collected during the trip would also be appreciated - if it was included here.
